2017 TVH Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1.5 Liter
H.W. Crabb's Hermosa Valley
The 2017 growing season started with ample rainfall, which glided into mild Spring weather, providing the environment for an even and healthy fruit set. Labor Day weekend was scorching which accelerated ripening and most likely saved the vintage for TVH and many in Napa. Fall was cool, which kept sugar levels in balance while skins developed. On October 7th, one day before fires raged through Napa and Sonoma, we had harvested 54% of our grapes. Unfortunately, some of the cooler blocks and more shaded rows would go unpicked due to smoke damage. The loss of the grapes and wine will be a hurdle, but we were fortunate compared to the plight of our neighbors and friends in Napa. The Tubbs Fire, one of many in Napa that year, is considered the fourth-deadliest wildfire in state history. Our hearts go out to all those affected.
The 2017s have outstanding balance and depth, but the fires greatly diminished volume. Nevertheless, the wines should prove to have great longevity.
The TVH 2017 Estate Cab shows black and red cherry fruit, cocoa, licorice, leather, rose hips, and dark earth all finely knit together. The aromas of fruit, spice, and flowers burst from the glass, and the mouthfeel is rich and velvety. The well-developed tannins and balanced acidity are testaments to the wine’s aging potential.
